It’s like seeing the Wizard of Oz for the first time. We can still remember that feeling of excitement as we played the first pinball game on our Captain Fantastic pinball machine and we enjoy helping others experience that exact same feeling. Everyone has a different story of how they got into pinball, but for us we grew up playing pinball in the 70’s. The one thing we love about pinball is the enjoyment we see on a young kids face when they play pinball for the first time. What is your budget when purchasing a pinball machine? What theme would your family prefer in a pinball: Rock n Roll theme, Sci-fi theme, Animation theme, Super Hero’s theme or a Blockbuster movie theme? Do you want a pinball machine that is a classic oldie or something new and modern with all the bells and whistles. When you’re looking for a new or used pinball machine, there are many things to consider. Great American Pinball has a huge selection of the best pinball machines to fit your needs right on our showroom floor. If you’re looking for an arcade video game, we have that too. While Red Alert 3 was supposed to release on the PC, 360, and PS3 all around the same time, at the last minute EA put the PS3 version on hold. Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 makes the fourth RTS release on the 360 system courtesy of the EA Los Angeles studio. After Lord of the Rings, EA released Command & Conquer 3, followed by its expansion pack: Kane’s Wrath. And for the most part, they should be pleased with how Red Alert 3 turned out.ĮA tested the RTS waters on the 360 with The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II, and ever since then, they’ve continued to release RTS games with controls that continue to improve. Red Alert 2 was definitely one of the highlights of the series, a game that was released over eight years ago – so fans have definitely been anticipating this sequel for a while. Hard to believe that it’s stayed relevant for this long but it’s a beloved Real Time Strategy (RTS) game series that has quite the fan following due to its combination of over the top campy acting with B-list actors and entertaining strategic gameplay. The Command & Conquer franchise has been around for over a decade now. – the shoddy AI partner if you’re playing campaign levels on Hard difficulty – somewhat of a barebones multiplayer with only 4 player support and no team matchmaking – still cumbersome to play optimally without a keyboard and mouse – skirmish mode and multiplayer extend game length even further – campy/amusing cutscenes, stars, and units – lengthy and enjoyable campaign with co-op support If you’re open to the idea, or even looking for one with a lengthy campaign after discovering how short the Halo Wars campaign was, you should definitely give Red Alert 3 a shot.Ĭmfl3x will also contribute his thoughts on the game to the review. For the most part, the game is enjoyable, but of course that depends on how you feel about a real time strategy game being played with a controller. That, plus 27 campaign missions is a pretty lengthy amount of time for a game, and we definitely got more than enough game length just from the campaign to justify the title’s price. Well, it’s a little of both, as cmfl3x and I decided to play through all 27 campaign missions on co-op together and were only able to continue in progress when both of us were available and had the time to do so. Either we’re incredibly slow gamers, or the game is just that lengthy. The related server has been shut down, so the game will wait until the request times out before loading. While the PC version of Red Alert 3 is superior, it’s still enjoyable on the 360.Ĭmfl3x and I have been playing this game on and off for the past two months, and it’s only now that I can finally put out a review.
Personally, this is how I use Flatpaks, when I install a Linux distribution on my desktop PC: Thanks to the sandboxing technology used under the hood, one and the same Flatpak desktop application is compatible with all Linux distributions. So why bother using Flatpak and Flathub to install desktop applications on your Linux system? Well, here’s the cool thing: Flatpaks are essentially Linux distribution agnostic. To install a desktop application, you use the flatpak utility to download and install its Flatpak-file from the Flathub online repository. With Flatpaks, a desktop application is packaged as a Flatpak-file.To install a desktop application, you use the apt utility to download and install its DEB-file from the Debian online package repository. On Debian, a desktop application is packaged as a DEB-file.Let’s compare this to software package management of a traditional Linux distribution. Flathub is an online repository that hosts Flatpak applications. An application installed as a Flatpak runs in a sandbox environment, isolated from the rest of the Linux system. You can think of a Flatpak as a modern packaging and deployment method for Linux desktop applications. This article teaches you all the ins-and-outs you need to know, to install desktop applications as a Flatpak from the Flathub online repository. Flathub offers an ever growing catalog of Linux desktop applications in the Flatpak format. Ever wanted to install a desktop application on your Linux PC, but your distribution’s package manager didn’t offer it? With a bit of luck you can find the desktop application on Flathub. The intensity of a transition is determined by the population difference between the initial and final states and the transition probability between those states which can be calculated using the Franck-Condon principle. The answer to this question is that these additional transitions do occur but they are less intense. While the representation in Figure 4 is accurate it poses the question of why the absorbed photon is promoted to the vibrational excited state S 1, v>0 rather than the vibrational ground state, S 1, v=0? After all, if the absorption transition was the S 0, v=0 -> S 1, v=0 and the fluorescence transition were S 1, v=0 -> S 0, v=0 there would be no Stokes shift as the transitions are isoenergetic. The origin of the Stokes shift is commonly represented in a Perrin-Jablonski diagram as an initial excitation to a higher vibrational level of the S 1 followed by a rapid non-radiative decay to the vibrational ground state of the S 1 (Figure 4), which means that the fluorescence will have a lower energy than the absorbed photon and therefore a longer wavelength.įigure 4: Perrin-Jablonski showing the vibrational relaxation origin of the Stokes Shift. The emission and absorption spectra of two fluorophores with a small and large Stokes shift are shown in Figure 3.įigure 3: The absorption and emission spectra of Rhodamine 6G in ethanol and 4-(Dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(4-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM) in 0.1 M H 2SO 4 measured using the FS5 Spectrofluorometer. The extent of the Stokes shift depends on the particular fluorophore and its solvation environment, with more polar solvents typically giving larger Stokes shifts. For very accurate wavenumber Stokes shift calculations one should therefore first convert the spectra to a wavenumber scale and locate the maxima from the wavenumber spectra (see Lakowicz Appendix I). When fluorescence spectra are converted from a wavelength scale to a wavenumber scale the position of the maxima slightly shift since the spectral bandpass of the measurement is constant in wavelength but not in wavenumber. It should be noted that the wavenumber Stokes shift expression written above is actually only an approximation since it assumes that the wavenumber maxima are at the same position as the wavelength maxima which is not strictly true. 3,4įigure 2: Definition of the Stokes shift for fluorescence. In fluorescence spectroscopy, the Stokes shift is the difference between the spectral position of the maximum of the first absorption band and the maximum of the fluorescence emission and can be expressed in either wavelength or wavenumber units as shown in Figure 2. Stokes Shift in Fluorescence Spectroscopy I am almost inclined to coin a word, and call the appearance fluorescence, from fluor-spar, as the analogous term opalescence is derived from the name of a mineral.”įigure 1: George Gabriel Stokes (1819 to 1903). It worth noting that Stokes was also the first to coin the term fluorescence, which appeared as a footnote in the same paper: 1,2 The shift to longer wavelength between the absorption and fluorescence spectra is accordingly called the Stokes shift in his honour. This is Stokes’ Law and states that the fluorescence emission occurs at a longer wavelength than the incident light. “There is one law relating to internal dispersion which appears to be universal, namely, that when the refrangibility of light is changed by dispersion it is always lowered. He presented his findings “ On the Change of the Refrangibility of Light” to the Royal Society of London in 1852. Stokes extensively studied the properties of what we now know as fluorescence and investigated how the properties of the fluorescent light differed from the incident light. The Stokes Shift is an important concept in both Fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy and is introduced in this article. The Stokes Shift is named after Irish physicist George Gabriel Stokes and is the spectral shift to lower energy between the incident light and the scattered or emitted light after interaction with a sample.
Each of these specialised towers can be upgraded the usual four times but cannot be further specialised into any other special tower. A stark difference from previous games is that Kingdom Rush Vengeance does not feature four primary towers instead it has a multitude of already specialised towers available for construction, and of these, five towers can be brought to each battle. A set amount of gold is provided to the player at the beginning of each level, and enemies killed provide the player with a gold bounty, allowing him to build more towers as the battle progresses. Towers are constructed using gold as the currency. If a set amount of enemies successfully pass through the defenses, the player loses. Such operations involve constructing towers that weather wave after wave of enemy assaults, with the goal of preventing any enemies from breaking through the defenses and going past the exit. The player, who acts as Vez'nan's general in the game, is responsible for the combat operations of Vez'nan's dark army. This game is in many ways similar to the previous games in the Kingdom Rush installments. only to reveal that a much deeper, darker evil lies within the former Denas' castle. Denas is defeated, and Vez'nan completes his invasion. After isolating King Denas from his major allies Alleria Swiftwind, Magnus Spellbane, and Gerald Lightseeker, Vez'nan proceeds to invade his castle, himself playing an active role in the battle for the castle alongside the player. The two take down major kingdom locations also featured in the original Kingdom Rush, including Silveroak Forest and Otil Farmlands. Lastly, Vez'nan proceeds to invade the grasslands that comprise Denas's territory. Eventually the player prevails and defeats Arkuz, encasing him in a sculpture of ice, and completing the penultimate step in Vez'nan's invasion. Then the army is split, trapped on multiple ice floes, and then it is hit by a blizzard as it makes its way to corner Arkuz, the king in the north. There, multiple awful situations befall the force, with firstly the north inhabitants being alerted to the dark army's presence. Instead of working their way through Stormcloud Temple like in the original Kingdom Rush, Vez'nan's force takes a detour and proceeds to the frozen north. The dark lord secures the funds needed to continue his campaign by capturing the immeasurable amounts of gold stored beneath the defeated king's throne. Although they meet multiple attempts at resistance, they eventually manage to corner Bolgur, the dwarven king, where he attempts a last stand, although it is in vain. With his army in tow, Vez'nan and the general begin invading the dwarven lands. Vez'nan then begins his plans for dominating the kingdom, starting with one of the kingdom's closest allies, the dwarves. Appointing the player as his general, both of them then proceed to liberate the tower and kill every human worker within. The tale begins as Vez'nan the dark lord escapes his fiery prison only to find his tower invaded by King Denas' human henchmen. and this time he's the one with the initiative! No Wi-Fi at your Dark Tower? No worries, just play offline!.50+ Achievements, hidden secrets and fun stuff for you to play and discover!.30 upgrades to train your army to their best form.10+ trinkets and artifacts for that extra edge in battle. New powers and reinforcements to vanquish your foes.Rush the Kingdom as you bring down 3 mighty Kings in the most legendary of boss fights!.Over 35 deadly enemies that will put all of your wits and tactical skills to the test. 9+ powerful heroes who will follow your command without hesitation.16+ challenging stages across three lands ripe for the taking!.Choose your arsenal of towers and make devastating combinations to stop your enemies!.16+ new towers, each with unique abilities and special powers. Letting too many enemies through results in a Game Over. Kingdom Rush: Vengeance follows the formula of a typical tower defense game.
Other companies have had this for a while, but it’s nice to see GoPro join that crowd. The idea there is to remove the fisheye effect. Some of these were there before, but Linear is new. So now you’ve got Medium, Linear, Wide, Superwide, and Narrow. GoPro has introduced a field of view option, which aims to simplify how the images will turn out from a zoom and perspective standpoint. It allows you to get more dynamic shots for photos. They also introduced a new HDR mode (which they call WDR). However, GoPro has set itself apart by introducing the ability to record RAW images (photos) – which is pretty cool. This feature puts it back in the camp of the vast majority of action cams these days that have GPS within them. But I’m sure those answers will become clear soon. Right now it just says it records position. Some of this is a bit unclear as to how exactly the GPS data will be used (for example, can you overlay speed during a recording?). Next, GoPro added the ability to record GPS data. These commands are picked up through the microphones, just like normal audio. GoPro’s voice control supports seven languages: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese. However, GoPro both allows you to customize these commands and has more commands than the VIRB Ultra 30. Next, both the Hero5 Black and Hero5 Session include voice control, fairly similar to what Garmin introduced with their VIRB Ultra 30 cameras a few weeks ago. On the Hero5 Black, these mics are located on the sides and top of the camera, and the unit will automatically choose the best sounding microphone during recording. This puts it more inline with the VIRB Ultra 30 in terms of minimizing wind noise. For example, on the audio front they’ve introduced three microphones, including noise cancelling. The Hero5 Black does see improvements in video and audio though. The entire GoPro lineup of cameras is now waterproof to various levels, with the Hero5 Black being waterproof to 10 meters (33ft). However, that touch screen menu system has been greatly simplified, making it easier for folks to figure out what they’re doing:Īs you probably noticed above, the touchscreen is on the exterior of the camera case – and that’s because the cameras are now fully waterproofed – no external case required. It’s got the resolution/quality specs of a Hero4 Black (4K video 30FPS), but it’s got the touchscreen like a Hero4 Silver did. The Hero5 Black is in many ways the features and specs of a Hero4 Silver & Black merging together. But if you’re still looking for a bit more – read on. With the video watched, you’re a pro now. Here’s a video deep-dive into the Hero5 cameras: Note that down below I have a comparison table comparing the features of the higher-end Hero5 Black to that of Garmin’s VIRB Ultra 30 offering, but for this section I’ll highlight the key new features.īut…if text and photos aren’t your thing – I’ve got you covered. This means that the entire lineup has received a refresh, and it’s also down to just three camera models (from six). Back in April they reduced that count a bit, but now they’ve cut everything down to these three new models:ġ) GoPro Hero5 Black: $399 – Their top-end camera, complete with GPS and 4K, voice control and image stabilizationĢ) GoPro Hero5 Session: $299 – The square Session body with high-end 4K specs, voice control, and image stabilizationģ) GoPro Hero Session: $199 – Same square Session from before, but with a minor microphone update Over the past two years they had amassed a wide number of camera price points that confused the market. So what has GoPro done? Well, they’ve simplified. Now technically, there are two new Hero5 branded cameras and one new non-Hero5 branded, but that’d have made for too long of a section header. Let’s dive straight into things! The New Hero5 cameras: Obviously there’s quite a bit of interest given it’s been two years since a major GoPro camera lineup launch (or, over a year if you count the Session). Now, I’ll be putting together a more hands-on piece over the next 24-48 hours, but until then, consider this a bit of an appetizer and landing place to discuss the new units. These include a handheld gimbal, external microphone/remote combos, and even a nifty $19 adapter to quickly sync your videos to your phone sans-battery. Today GoPro announced three new action cameras, a drone, and a rather interesting flotilla of accessories. Update: Go see my full GoPro Hero5 Black In-Depth Review here! Instead, you should probably consider one of the third-party projects that take the Wine source code and build a more convenient interface on top of it, one that helps you quickly install and configure common applications. These Wine binaries allow you to run Windows software, but don't provide any helpful graphical tools for installing and setting up common applications, so they're best for advanced users already familiar with Wine. Virtual machines and Boot Camp are more rock-solid options, but they do add more overhead and require a Windows installation. Some applications will crash or not run at all.
